Zumba dancing is aerobic dancing inspired by Latin Dance. The word Zumba comes from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun, and that is exactly what I did!
When I went to my first Zumba class I really didn’t know what to expect. With my dance background I figured it would be similar to dance classes I’ve taken with maybe a fitness twist….well, was I in for a surprise!
This was possibly the most fun and exercise I’ve ever had in a one hour class and I looovvveeee dance classes (well I would hope so seen as I’m a dance instructor) but a Zumba workout is different! It has all the fun elements of a dance class, music, moves, sing a long, ohh yes your encouraged to sing along! But it also has all the benefits of a full on fitness class or gym session as you are working muscles from head to toe, and the best bit is, you don’t even notice, as you’re having such a blast. It’s not until the next day when you’re feeling a little ‘sensitive’ in certain muscles that you realise how much of a workout you just had.
I was literally, pardon the pun, dripping with sweat….attractive I know but who doesn’t want to leave a class well and truly sure they’ve had a great work out. Zumba dancing in a word is just non stop FUN, unlike a dance class there is no break down of steps you just follow the teacher from song to song. They are mostly easy moves with some slightly more difficult ones thrown in for good measure, which you can see gives the class a great sense of achievement when mastered. In one hour we touch on soooo many dance styles, Reggaeton, Salsa, Cumbia, Hip Hop, and Merengue to name but a few and we even do a bit of Beyonce booty shaking which I thoroughly enjoy. The Zumba music is infectious too; you will be dancing to some Latin and Zumba tunes one minute and then moving to chart toppers the next.
